Light Chemical Peels

Sun exposure, acne, or the simple process of aging can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted, or scarred. If you want your skin to look smoother and younger, a chemical peel is another non-surgical solution to freshen and rejuvenate the skin of your face. At Delray Beach Plastic Surgery, our chemical peel uses a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged outer layers.

A chemical peel, also called chemexfoliation or derma peeling, is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck, décolleté, and hands.

 You can improve:

  • Acne or acne scars
  • Age and liver spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Irregular skin pigmentation
  • Rough skin and scaly patches
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin

Chemical solutions are carefully applied to your skin to improve the texture by removing damaged outer layers. You can repeat these treatments weekly for up to six weeks to achieve your desired results.

Here's how it works:

  • Your face will be cleansed
  • The chemical solution is brushed onto your skin and left for up to 10 minutes. You may feel some mild stinging
  • The chemical peel is then washed off and neutralized

Now that you know what a facial chemical peel can do for your skin, it's important to understand what they cannot do.

A Light Cemical Peel cannot:

  • Treat deep facial lines
  • Tighten loose or sagging skin
  • Stimulate collagen production
  • Remove broken capillaries
  • Change pore size
  • Remove deep scars

You may not be a good candidate for chemical peeling if you have:

  • A history of skin scarring
  • Abnormal pigmentation
  • Afro-Caribbean or Asian skin
  • Facial warts
  • Red hair and pale freckled skin
  • Used certain acne treatments within the last year

As with all facial procedures, a thorough health assessment and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Your understanding of procedures, routines, and risks is essential to a successful final result. Following your consultation, we continue our discussion at the preoperative appointment.

The success and safety of your chemical peel procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your initial consultation. Dr. Westine will ask a number of questions about your health, desires, and lifestyle.

Be prepared to discuss:

  • Why you want the procedure, your expectations, and desired outcome
  • Medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments
  • Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs
  • Any previous surgeries

Dr. Westine may also:

  • Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk actors
  • Take photographs for your medical record
  • Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes of your chemical peel and any risks or potential complications
