Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another non-surgical way to freshen and rejuvenate the skin of your face. At Delray Beach Plastic Surgery, we make use of a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand the skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, and sun damage.

There are two types of microdermabrasion treatment devices: One is a hand-held device that streams tiny crystalline microparticles across the skin with an attached vacuum that simultaneously suctions those exfoliating crystals back into the machine, along with the dead or loosened skin. The other is a diamond-tipped wand that is gently moved across your skin to slough off the top layer (epidermis) and stimulate new skin growth. This technique also helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a younger-looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that's abundant when you're a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen production declines as we age, resulting in looser, uneven skin..

Microdermabrasion can:

  • Eliminate age spots and blackheads
  • Eliminate hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin)
  • Exfoliate your skin, resulting in a refreshed appearance
  • Lessen the appearance of stretch marks
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce or eliminate enlarged pores
  • Treat acne and the scars left by acne

Your polished new look should be long-lasting, depending on the severity of your skin damage and the number of treatments that you receive. Many people have two microdermabrasion treatments per month at first, and then one per month as part of a maintenance plan.

As with all facial procedures, a thorough health assessment and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Your understanding of procedures, routines, and risks is essential to a successful final result. Following your consultation, we continue our discussion at the pre-operative appointment.

The success and safety of your microdermabrasion procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your initial consultation. Dr. Westine will ask a number of questions about your health, desires, and lifestyle.

Be prepared to discuss:

  • Why you want the procedure, your expectations, and desired outcome
  • Medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments
  • Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs
  • Any previous surgeries

Dr. Westine may also:

  • Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Take photographs for your medical record
  • Discuss your options and recommend a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes of microdermabrasion and any risks or potential complications
